I confess....

Last night when I got home I read my book for 2 and a half hours, went right off to sleep, and never set my alarm clock which resulted in both kids being late for school.

I was so excited when I got my email from H&M about their new website only to be extremely disappointed that you still can not order online in the US! Why is this?

I scored a coupon today for a FREE SPRAY TAN! I am quite nervous about this as I have never had it done before. I quit going to the tanning bed years ago and my legs could really use some color.

that I have a TON of clean laundry to fold, hang, and put away. All our clothes are in laundry baskets which made it very difficult to find something to wear this morning while we were rushing around late!

WOW - Cannot believe how long it has been since I updated - YIKES! I have been so busy lately with work, family, exercising, and just living. I have lots to update about and still very much need to do my post from the Mamarazzi's Favorite Thing Blog Swap. I plan to start blogging again regularly.

The hubby and I started The 30 Day Shred; let me tell you it is a serious workout. It only takes 20 minutes but you will be dying by the end of it - especially if you are out of shape like me. We have made it through Day 2 and I can hardly walk! I will be continuing on my mission along with our walking we have been doing. We have this beautiful lake to walk around. We go around twice which makes 2 miles. They have an open field area away from the people where our dog can just go run around - which he loves. Ever since we started taking him for walks, he has started thinking that he gets to go everywhere we do. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. I will be updating soon about the progress on our tree house.

Roasted Cauliflower, Chickpeas, and Olives

I got this recipe out of the Cooking Light magazine and made it tonight. It was so good. I had no problem getting my 2 kids ages 10 and 6 to eat it. A little different but delicious. Served mine with Basmati rice and mahi-mahi fish. Best part is it only has 176 calories.

Roasted Cauliflower, Chickpeas, and Olives

Ingredients

5 1/2 cups cauliflower florets (about 1 pound)
24 green Spanish olives, pitted and halved
8 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped
1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves

Preparation

1. Preheat the oven to 450°.
2. Combine first 4 ingredients in a small roasting pan. Drizzle with oil; sprinkle with pepper and salt. Toss well to coat. Bake at 450° for 22 minutes or until cauliflower is browned and crisp-tender, stirring after 10 minutes. Sprinkle with parsley.

Brussel Sprouts with Pancetta

I found this recipe in Cooking Light magazine, and made them to take to our Thanksgiving dinner. Man they were yummy! Brussel sprouts are the "in vegetable" right now so there are lots of good recipes floating around. You can use bacon instead of pancetta if you like.

Ingredients
2 1/2 pounds Brussels sprouts, trimmed
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 cup chopped pancetta (about 4 ounces)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon cider vinegar

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 450°.
2. Cook Brussels sprouts and 1 tablespoon salt in boiling water 6 minutes or until almost tender. Drain and plunge into ice water; drain well.
3. Cook pancetta in a large skillet over medium-low heat until crisp, stirring occasionally. Remove pancetta from pan, reserving drippings.
4. Cut Brussels sprouts in half lengthwise; place on a baking sheet. Add reserved drippings, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper; toss to coat. Bake at 450° for 15 minutes or until browned, stirring after 10 minutes. Combine Brussels sprouts, pancetta, and vinegar in a large bowl; toss well.

New Year - 2010

Well here we are in 2010 already. Still cannot believe it. Had a heck of a time getting up this morning and back into that school and work routine. Started Day 1 of my diet today....so far so good. But the first couple of days always seem to be the easiest for me. It is the sticking with it that’s a problem. I do know that I have willpower just got to find where it is. My hubby is dieting with me so hopefully it will work with the two of us being there for each other. We quit smoking together - June 2010 will be 5 years, so I know that together we can do it. So the plan is:

Breakfast - Special K

Lunch - we will be alternating weekly between All-You-Can-Eat Diet Soup (just like vegetable soup and actually very delicious) and salads with baked fish or chicken.

Dinner - As usual but with portion control and hopefully some new low cal recipes

I am limiting myself to 1-8 ounce glass of Coke a day and plan to drink lots of water.

So with that being said my goal is to lose 20 pounds by mid March. I will post my weekly progress here. Anyone interested in the recipe for All-You-Can-Eat Diet Soup will find it below. It only has 45 calories per cup! Recipe is very easy and makes 28 cups.

·1 pound(s) carrots, sliced

·3 medium (1 1/2 pounds) onions, chopped

·4 stalk(s) celery, sliced

·2 large cloves garlic, crushed with press

·2 can(s) (28 ounces each) whole tomatoes in juice

·1/2 small (1-pound) head green cabbage, thinly sliced

·3/4 pound(s) green beans, trimmed and each cut into thirds (I used frozen)

·1 can(s) (48-ounce) chicken broth ·6 cup(s) water ·1 teaspoon(s) salt

·1/4 teaspoon(s) ground black pepper

·3 medium (1 1/4 pounds) zucchini, sliced into half-moons

·2 bag(s) (6 ounces each) baby spinach leaves

Directions
1. Coat 12-quart stockpot (or 2 large saucepans) with nonstick cooking spray. Over medium-high heat, add carrots, onions, celery, and garlic; cook 8 minutes or until vegetables soften, stirring occasionally.

2. Add tomatoes with their liquid, breaking up tomatoes with side of spoon. Add cabbage, green beans, broth, water, salt, and pepper; heat to boiling over high heat, stirring occasionally.

3. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Increase heat to high; stir in zucchini and spinach and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 minutes or until all vegetables are tender.

Melt-In-Your-Mouth Pumpkin Cookies

Melt-In-Your-Mouth Pumpkin Cookies

2 cups butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 15oz can pumpkin
4 cups all purpose flour

1. Preheat oven to 350
2. In large bowl, beat butter with mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds or until creamy and 'whipped'. Add granulated sugar, baking powder & soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Beat until combined, scraping bowl occasionally.
3. Add eggs, and vanilla, beat until combined.
4. Beat in pumpkin
5. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the remaining flour.
6. Drop dough by heaping teaspoons 2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookies sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until tops are set. Transfer to wire rack to cool.

Frosting:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup milk or half & half
1 tsp vanilla
2 3/4 cup powdered sugar

1. Heat butter and brown sugar in small saucepan until melted and smooth.
2. Stir in vanilla and milk. Transfer to a medium bowl and get out your hand held mixer.
3. Beat in powdered sugar until smooth.
4. Spread frosting on cookies. If desired, sprinkle with additional cinnamon.

Makes about 60 cookies.

So everyday lately my family has been going for a walk over to the park. This is a really nice park with lots of scenery and a lake. My littlest one really loves rolling around in the grass.

My dog Pinky has a growth on his back leg. It just kinda popped up last Wednesday. It was very large and oozing pus. My hubby took him to the vet on Friday and the vet thinks it might be cancer. It was very swollen and inflamed so we have been treating it with medicine. He goes back to the vet on Wednesday. If all the swelling has gone down we will have more information then. We are very sad. He is so special to us! We have had him for almost 9 years and he is a major part of our family. Hopefully everything will be ok!

Ok – so a lot has been going on and I have been neglecting my blog. After vacation it was really hard to get back to blogging with school starting, work, creating, and just living. So I am back and will be updating regularly from now on. First thing is the tree house. A lot of progress has been made. We have a wall up now!! I watched Super and my hubby build this wall the other day on our deck and then had to go to the grocery store and was amazed when I came back home. I have no idea how they got that wall up there, but they did.

HUGE MISTAKE!

Today has totally sucked!! I made a colossal mistake and left my back window down in my SUV. Of course it rained forever last night with lightening and thunder. This morning when I went out to my car I saw my window down and immediately thought "Oh No - someone has tried to break into my car". Then I looked and saw no glass and I thought - no dummy you left your window down. So I start up my car because of course I am running late to work - as usual. When I start it up there are two lights on. One is the check engine light and the other is the VSC light. So at this point I am thinking....you have really done it now. And with my light bit of car knowledge thinking to myself how the heck could me leaving my window down and the car getting rained in have anything to do with my engine. So I call my husband who of course yells at me and says he is to mad to even talk to me because he told me to make sure my windows were up the night before. I get to work and look up the codes which all say "Take to Toyota Dealership". So on my lunch break I went and had the code read and it said "Tire Speed Sensor" I guess one of them is possibly bad. So they reset the codes and I am waiting to see if that comes back on. BUT so the big thing that happened is that the window that was left down is the window behind the driver and right below the drivers seat is the VOICE RECOGNITION AND NAVIGATION BOX and now my navigation does not work. I am very sad about this! The warranty is for 3 years or 36 thousand miles and I am out of both. My mileage reads 36,941. Can you believe that? So $1500 for a new navigation system or $200-400 for a rebuilt one. Guess I will be saving up my money for a rebuilt one.

So my little one and I had quite a time last night. She wanted me to help her find a dress and fix her hair so that she would look like Katara, a water bender from Avatar. So after many wrong dresses and scarfs, and a couple of crying spells, I think we got it....at least what made her happy! We wrapped her up and straightened her hair and here she is. Cute as she can be!

Love reading...just got hooked on the J.D. Robb series. This is the newest one and the one that got me hooked. It was GREAT!

Vitamin Water is definitely one of my favorite things. I do however feel a little let down that I thought when I was drinking the whole bottle that it was only 50 calories until some dear one told me that that is per serving and that there are 2.5 servings in a bottle. I mean come on just be straightforward already! Still love it though.

This was actually many years ago because my kids are much bigger now. This was about 3 years ago....they are now 10 and 6. We were on our yearly vacation to the beach. They were hanging out having homemade icecream made by there SuperDad....always a treat. Great ending to a long day on the beach. I so miss when my kids were younger. I love that my little girl hardly had any hair - just like me when I was a kid. She had the cutest little bald head forever.

Two Newest Etsy listings.

Here is a gorgeous eye catching necklace. This necklace was created with a white freshwater coin pearl, a flashy labradorite briolette, a pale green prasiolite pear briolette, and a fine silver hammered teardrop made by me. These have all been beautifully wire wrapped with sterling silver wire. I have added light gray Swarovski crystals as accents at the front and at the clasp. This necklace measures 18 inches and has a sterling silver hook clasp and a sterling silver rolo chain. This can be worn casual or for dressing up.

8. Learned a new jewelry technique, but ran out of wire so I have not been able to thoroughly practice yet but will soon.
9. Went to Cherry Park on Monday with the Boyscouts and walked around while they biked.
10. Woke up late this morning – kids were late for school….always a great thing.
11. Ate lunch with Asa today – he is my sweetie!
12. Got my hair done by my little one Wednesday while I sat outside and relaxed.
13. Said on my porch swing with a nice glass of hot tea and a nice cool breeze.

Lost 4 lbs!

So I went out and bought the other Hungry-Girl Cookbook, and I have to say that it has even more yummy low calorie recipes. So far I have lost 4 pounds – since 4/27/09! I am really happy about eating healthier and making better choices. My husband and I went and looked up all the different foods we eat at fast food places and I could not believe the calories. I have been eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and dessert and staying under 1000 calories a day and those burgers have 1000 calories all by themselves! Crazy! Last night we had Turkey Sloppy Jane’s (271 Calories) and Fiber-ific Fried Cheese Sticks (155 Calories and you get 4). We had some friends over who also tried the Sloppy Janes and agreed that they were good. Tonight I am making the V10 soup. Cant wait only 60 calories per cup!

2. Asa was Terrific Kid at School for Month of April – had ceremony yesterday.
3. Seeing my wonderful family on Wednesday for another family dinner and a walk in the park.
4. Got the cookbook Hungry-Girl 200 under 200 and have been using it all week!
5. Lost 3 pounds!
6. Read about this cool Twenty Things Thursday on my swap partners blog. Thanks Janna!
7. Sold a necklace to my awesome swap partner Janna!
8. Discovered a new snack which I love – Laughing Cow Light Swiss cheese with pretzels for dipping….YUM!
9. Finally had some time to make some new jewelry pieces.
10. Climbed a GIANT hill at the park yesterday with my whole family and my dog.
11. Eating under 1000 calories three days in a row
12. Talked with my son’s teacher this morning – she told me “He is so far ahead” – really makes you proud, and this was his Gifted and Talented teacher!
13. Enjoying watching my little girl learn to walk on her hands and do hand stands – I remember doing the same thing and doing cartwheels for days in my yard.
14. Skating in the driveway with my kids – LOVE IT!
15. We have some little tomatoes growing in our back yard….this is our first garden. It is a small one just to see if we can do it. If not my Dad has a HUGE one so we will be ok!
16. Got to see both Ms. Hanson’s on Sunday – love them!
17. This is pretty hard thinking of 20 things!
18. Happy that tomorrow is Friday!
19. Found out that I really like Tofu Noodles and they have no calories.
20. Tried Soy Milk – not sure how I like it, its very different. I’m a Whole Milk kind of Gal

Ok, so it is official. I am a Hungry-Girl. I saw this cookbook on my swap partner Janna’s blog. You can check her out at http://happinessisajourneyforjanna.blogspot.com. I immediately went out on Saturday and got this cookbook, looked through it, planned my meals for the week, and made my grocery list. I like this book because there are some really good recipes in there and it’s all stuff I can make for my whole family. I don’t have to cook two separate meals. So just to give an update I have tried 3 of the recipes and I really liked them all. This feels like something I can maintain. Here is a little about the recipes I tried:

•Spinach, Tomato, Feta n’ Egg Wrap Attack – now I did not actually put the tomatoes in there so it was just the egg, spinach, and feta with the wrap. My hubby and I had it for lunch yesterday. It was very good and actually filling. Calories - 168

•So Low Mein with Chicken – Ok this was fantastic. The whole family loved it. I was quite surprised because the noodles are tofu noodles. They were great. My daughter confessed that she loved them. It felt like a light dinner but at the same time it was filling and it only had 167 calories!

•Cinnamon Vanilla French Toast Nuggets – now this was interesting. These are made with hotdog buns. I have to say they were also pretty good. Makes me excited that I can still eat some of the things that I love. This is a very simple recipe. Calories – 151

So you should all take a look at this cookbook. They have teamed up with Weight Watchers and you can find the points for all the recipes online. Honestly I think it is amazing how low-cal these are!

Tell me a little about yourself, your store and what you sell.

I am first and foremost a mom to my (eek!) sixteen year-old daughter and wife to my husband of (omg!) twenty-five years. I have two Etsy stores (okay, one is MUCH more active than the other!). At SayYourPieceToo, I offer whimsical hand-painted bisque plates and tiles for special occasions. At SayYourPiece, I sell hand-built ceramic pieces of many different designs; all of which can be customized/personalized to make them that much more special for each of my clients.

How long have you been making the craft/art that you sell? What started your interest in it? How did you learn? / What made you decide to turn your art/craft into a business? What support or inspiration have you had along the way?

I’ve been working in ceramics in various forms for about six years now. It began when I first saw a ceramic piece bearing the imprint of the hands and feet of my good friend’s little one. I just fell in love and SO wished that I had been able to have one made for my little girl. By that time, though, my daughter was already well past babyhood. My heart actually ached at the idea that I’d missed out, and the idea slowly grew that I would start a small business making sure that other moms didn’t have to feel the way I did! Because I was totally committed to being home to raise my one and only, it seemed the perfect idea. That was the beginning of Clayful Moments (http://www.clayfulmoments.com) and “KidPrint Keepsakes”, which is a business that still exists today, and has expanded to include several other activities.In ceramics, one learns by doing… and wrecking a lot of clay! I started with the KidPrint Keepsakes, moved on to pouring my own pieces from slip, then worked on improving my hand-painting technique, and finally got into hand-building the small pieces that I sell on Say Your Piece!. The inspiration for most of what I do comes from my deeply held belief that family and commitment are the most important things in life. Anything that celebrates the special times in our lives, the dedication that we have to one another, and the absolute blessing that is our children is inspiration for me. Fortunately, I find that so many Etsy clients feel the same way, and so are enthusiastic about and supportive of my work. It is, truly, very validating and very gratifying.

Do you have any other hobbies / interests?

Outside of my family and my work, my greatest enjoyment comes from watching my daughter play sports. She is a wonderful girl, a great student (okay, she gets all A’s, but I have nag her A LOT!), an exceptional shortstop and a MONSTER defensive basketball player. Her father and I soak up every second of her play that we can.My other new hobby is following blogs! Until Etsy, I had no idea that there were so many creative and talented people out there with their own blogs. I marvel at people who have so much to say and who take the time to say it! I especially love food-related blogs like Sunday Baker (http://comeandpeek.blogspot.com/) and another by one of my fabulous clients called The Cutting Edge of Ordinary (http://thecuttingedgeofordinary.blogspot.com/). Of course, MrsFatFace has been added to the list very recently!

How long have you been selling on Etsy? Do you sell full or part time?
I signed up at Etsy back in April of 2008, but really didn’t nurture it because I was in the middle of a very large preschool project with Clayful Moments. I really got going in July, and so now have been working at it for about eight months. Hard to say if I do it full time or part time… sometimes it seems very part-time, other times it seems that there isn’t enough time in a day!

Do you sell outside of Etsy? If so where?
I maintain a website for my hand-built and hand-painted pieces (http://www.say-your-piece.com), but have recently streamlined and linked everything over to Etsy. I’m considering other venues, and if I can find one that markets itself well, I will certainly pursue it.

What is your favorite way to promote your Etsy store?
Honestly, this is probably my biggest area of weakness. I’m happy for opportunities such as this… blog features have been very helpful. I do spend time in the Etsy forums, usually though the motive is to learn something new or get a specific question answered. I must say that I have been extremely fortunate that many of my clients who have happened across my work on Etsy have become almost regulars. The fact that they can get gifts that are tailored to their friends and family, and that these gifts can’t really be found anywhere else seems to bring them back again and again. I do hope that this is something that continues and grows over time.

Do you have a blog? If so what is your blog address, and what do you feature / write about?

I do not blog. Because it seems that EVERYBODY else does, I have considered it, but I simply can’t figure out how I could keep one going for more than a week! I have plenty to say, but most of it isn’t related to my work. The danger for me would be lapsing into political discourse and I’m a firm believer that politics and business should not be mixed (witness Washington DC!).

What is the thing that you are most proud of?
Not surprisingly, I am most proud of raising a lovely girl and nurturing a marriage that has provided my daughter with an understanding of the importance of family and a strong sense of security. Having two parents who model and consistently verbalize their commitment to doing whatever is right for the family will be invaluable to our daughter as she embarks on her life. Making sure that she is educated, healthy, happy, well-balanced and a good human being is everything to both of us.

What do you wish you had more time for?
I don’t think there’s a mother out there that doesn’t wish for more “down time” with her family. Unfortunately, it’s not my activities that create the time crunch; if it were, I’d just rearrange my schedule! Between my husband’s work and my daughter’s school, sports and friends, the time just doesn’t exist. So we do the best that we can with the time that we have.

What is your favorite part of the day?
It’s a toss up between the end of the day when we are all finally home together, and the time during the day when everyone is gone and I can fulfill orders or create new pieces. Playing with clay can be exceptionally therapeutic…. hence the popularity of Play Doh!

Easter 2009

Can not believe Easter is done and over with! This was not a traditional Easter for us this year. We had lots going on, but the Easter Bunny did come visit and the kids had an Easter Egg hunt which was really fun. My darling Mother-in-law and Father-in-law came down for dinner and cooked Steak Diane and baked potatoes for us, which was very YUMMY! My Mom made me a Lemon Meringue Pie and gave it to me for Easter. Lemon Meringue Pie is my favorite, my grandmother makes it for me and I just love it. So I shared my pie with everyone and managed to eat 2 pieces myself.

Paper Affection was started on Etsy by Suanne. She is a super talented origami artist. I love her many different creations. She makes earrings, necklaces, ornaments, hair pins all using her paper creations. Suanne was kind enough to answer a couple questions about her craft and how she got started on Etsy.

Tell me a little about yourself, your store and what you sell.
I'm Suanne and I love origami! I'm 22 and I just started my real life job in the big city. I'm an origami artist and I try to make it more practical and sell origami jewelry, hair pins, and ornaments.

How long have you been making the craft/art that you sell? What started your interest in it? How did you learn?
It’s been about 13 years now since that fourth grade class where I made my first crane. I first got into origami because I had this problem with sitting still when I was a kid. I discovered that folding paper helped me concentrate in class while I took notes. This was especially true in college and long lectures and I honestly believe I did better in class when I was folding! I'm mostly self-taught, but I love me a big advanced origami book!

What made you decide to turn your art/craft into a business? What support or inspiration have you had along the way?
As I made more and more origami, I realized that if there wasn't a real use for my models, and they'd all go to waste - and I couldn't let that happen! So I set out to make my origami functional - jewelry was my first thought, and I'm exploring other mediums. After I sold a few pairs on DeviantArt, I realized my idea was good enough to have my own store. Other DeviantArtists have been supportive, especially my friend Mel, who owns sugarposse.etsy.com.

Do you have any other hobbies / interests?
Real Estate (is that weird? That's my day job) I also love photography, New York City, drawing, sculpting, and summer. :) And hugs. I love hugs.

How long have you been selling on Etsy? Do you sell outside of Etsy? If so where?

My favorite is Saturday mornings, when I get to photograph what I made that week - all my hard work goes into a pretty picture for everyone to see and I love choosing angles and playing with colors!

What happened to March...

Ok Seriously, March has been a blur! Both of my children have birthdays in March, they both had the flu, and I am exhausted. My darling little girl turned 6 on the 28th of March. I can not believe how fast they grow. She is very special and dear to me. When she was 4 we got her ears pierced. For some reason it did not work out….they kept getting infected. So for her birthday this year I made her some clip on earrings which she loved. I will post pictures of those later. For her party we had Strawberry Pie and my Mom made Blueberry Yum Yum and boy is it YUM! I had 4 pieces and then fussed at my hubby when he ate the last one while I was out getting groceries! Lucky for me my Mom has another one that she made at her house. Death to my HIPS for sure. Also last night I made Pasta Carbonara off of the Pioneer Woman’s website…..very, very good. You should go check her out.

6. I LOVE flowers. Every spring and summer I spent to much money on flowers. This is something I got from my Dad. He always kept our yard so pretty and colorful with gorgeous flowers. My favorite flower is the Hibiscus. There was always a Hibiscus plant right outside my window when I was a kid growing up.

7. I LOVE art. My hubby is an artist and his work is amazing. My children are also blessed with this talent (me not so much). They both have there art on special display this month. Very, very proud of them.

The Flu

Well lots of things have been going on in my house this week. Friday morning I woke up to my daughter crying in her room. I went to see what was wrong and she said that her tummy hurt and that she was to dizzy to come and get me. She was burning up so I took her temperature….it was 103. So I made a doctors appt and took her in. Turns out that she has the FLU….the doctor said she tested positive for both strains of the flu. So I am working hard to get her better and then my hubby is sick with it. So my son and I are the only ones ok and then Saturday night he comes down with the flu. I am desperately trying not to get this. It is such hard work running around disinfecting everything. AND I HAVE TO GO IN TO WORK TOMORROW FOR A LONG TIME!! Still trying to figure out who is going to take care of everyone then. I decided we needed to keep my little girl in the living room while she was sick and that I would sleep in there with her. So what does she do……she goes and gets on the big couch and leaves me the loveseat. I have slept like crap all weekend with my legs are bunched up! She is getting better so that is good. I have barely been able to get her to eat all weekend. So today she asks for a BUTTER SANDWICH. I was like ewww gross, and tried to talk her out of it. And yet she would not budge and she wanted to make it herself (she is 5). So I relented and let her and she ate it up!

I have crafted all my life. I love to create and make great things. In my life I have owned and run 3 antique shops, I love anything vintage. I try to sell what I create and in my etsy shop it is Rag~Bags, embellished purses, and soldered / altered jewelry. I joined etsy in Aug.2007. I guess I have been selling part-time on etsy and not promoting it well either. I do sell locally at home. I have been making Rag~Bags and soldered jewelry for 4 or 5 yrs. You know my mother and grandmothers had always sewed and made things all my life.

I do enjoy decorating and gardening too.

Hanami Gallery - Origami Cards and Ornaments

These are the beautiful creations from Hanami Gallery. She creates beautiful cards and ornaments from fine Japanese papers. My favorite is the Red Butterflies card above. She was so kind to answer a couple of questions for me about herself and how she got started crafting.

I went to college for mathematics and economics, but I've always loved art and crafting. I learned how to fold origami when I was very young. My first books were from Tomoko Fuse and I still have her books to this day! I also drew, painted, and took photography. My grandmother also taught me how to knit and I enjoyed knitting capes for our chickens in the winter. HAH. I love paper. I tried to think about how I could showcase some of the great papers I have. My mom has always loved collecting cards. I thought making cards would be a great way to showcase the paper, and I could always use them if they did not sell! My family and fiance have supported me and helped me when I get down about my craft. My inspiration is the paper. Really I look at each sheet of paper and think about what type of design would best showcase the paper.

As for other hobbies or interests, I enjoy knitting and just learned how to crochet. I’m expecting some dyes and will try hand painting yarn! I also enjoy playing video games! HAH. It is a lot of fun when I can really escape into other worlds. I just started selling on Etsy in January 2009.Before I moved to Providence I showed in a gallery in Pennsylvania for a little while, but the commission was a bit much. I also had a website, but got rid of it to make another new website that is currently in progress. I also have a blog where I try to show some items from my shop every now and again.My favorite ways to promote my store is probably word of mouth.

Renegades is an Etsy shop run by Stephanee from Indiana. Stephanee says "Renegades designs are made to showcase your individuality and creativness in a world that would like us all to just grow up a bit."

How long have you been making the craft/art that you sell? What started your interest in it? How did you learn?

I remember as a kid getting the craft kits for Christmas. Make your own candle or friendship bracelet... I did not care about any other gifts. I just wanted to make something. My drive to create has always been like that. I have tried just about every craft I can get my hands on. Right now I am making (and selling) purses, wallets and accessories.

What made you decide to turn your art/craft into a business? What support or inspiration have you had along the way?

For the past several Christmas's I have not had much money for gifts, so I made them. Those gifts were cherished much more than gifts I had spent tons of money on. And with a walking billboard like my mom, the orders came rolling in. My dad had always inspired me to think outside the corporate box. He has been my inspiration to keep going!

Do you have any other hobbies / interests?

As a hobby I will find a new craft or a new technique. All of my free time is spent creating something.

How long have you been selling on Etsy?

Do you sell full or part time?I have been a member of Etsy for 2 years. I have only recently started adding items to my store and promoting. I have a 9-5, but I would give it up in a heartbeat for a full time Etsy store.

Do you sell outside of Etsy? If so where?

I only take custom orders outside of Etsy. But I am determined to start the craft fair circuit this spring. I'm also building up inventory to take to the brick and mortar shops in my hometown.

What is your favorite way to promote your Etsy store?

I think blogging is fun. I stress about it a lot because I am afraid I am not too interesting. I do not even know if anyone reads my ramblings... but I will still write. My mom is my favorite way to promote! All I have to do is make her something and she will tell everyone she knows!

I am most proud of my work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. My dad instilled that in me at a very young age. I have always wanted to work hard and work for myself!

What do you wish you had more time for?

There is never enough time for marketing. But honestly I wish I had more time to just dabble... and make random things for no reason... just because they make me smile.

What is your favorite part of the day?

My favorite time of the day is the morning drive to work. I commute 30 min each way. It gives me a meditation time to reflect on the day ahead, what I have done and what I need to do. I usually get most of my great ideas during that time. The sunrise always greets me.

Moonofglass is an etsy shop run by Elizabeth from Tennessee. She creates fused glass jewelry and home decor. She was kind enough to answer a couple questions about her Etsy shop and how she got started on Etsy.

How long have you been making your craft/art that you sell? What started your interest in it? How did you learn?

I started working with glass doing mosaics and stained glass about four years ago. About a year ago, I finally decided to take the plunge and buy a small kiln. I've been fusing since then, and invested in a larger kiln at the beginning of last year. I actually started working with glass because someone suggested that I needed a hobby. I never realized how addictive it would be! I'm entirely self-taught. I've learned a lot from books and the Internet, as well as just experimenting on my own.

What made you decide to turn your art/craft into a business? What support or inspiration have you had along the way?

I haven't had a single job that I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. Art is the only thing that's ever been consistently in my life. Usually, I do something hardcore for about six months before I get tired of it. Art, though, is something I never have been able to take a break from.

A few friends of mine suggested that I try to sell my stuff. So I gave it a shot, and started selling locally. When I began selling, I realized that this was a lot more fun than my day job, and something I could do forever, so I started building my business. One day, I hope to be a full time artist!

Do you have any other hobbies / interests?

A ton! I'm an avid reader, I have a penchant for musical theatre, and I love hiking and backpacking. You'll also find me with a video game controller in my hand from time to time. Playing video games are a great stress reliever for me!

How long have you been selling on Etsy? Do you sell full or part time?

I've not been on Etsy for every long. I opened up shop on October 30, 2008. I'm only part time now, selling just enough to keep me in supplies. :)

Do you sell outside of Etsy? If so where?

I have a few regular local customers, and I've done a couple of craft shows. I'm working on getting my work in local stores.

What is your favorite way to promote your Etsy store?

My favorite is the Etsy forums. :) This isn't always as productive as other methods, but it does give interesting results! I also use Flickr and rely heavily on hits from Project Wonderful.

Do you have a blog? If so what is your blog address, and what do you feature / write about?

Where do you hope to see your business / Etsy store in the future? Eventually, I would like to be a full time artist. I think Etsy will be a significant chunk of my revenue. I'd like to be making at least ten thousand dollars a year from Etsy sales sometime within the next few years.

I would really like to get my work featured in a gallery.

What is the thing that you are most proud of?

Handling the business myself. I have some health problems that make consistency difficult for me in most things, but my business is something that will always have my attention, no matter what.

What do you wish you had more time for?

Experimentation. Since I'm working full time too, I only have the weekends to really "play" with my glass. During the week, I have planned things that go in my kiln each night, so I don't get as much time to do the artistic work then.

What is your favorite part of the day?

Evenings. Once I get home from the commute, I get to play with my dog, then get to work in my studio.

Fine Silver Hammered Rings

Ok so I have really had a time trying to learn this craft. Asked for all the tools I would need for Christmas. Then went out and bought the ones I did not get because I so desperately wanted to get started. I acquired a book in the beginning of December and read it and read it again. Could not wait for Christmas to come so I could try it out. Finally Christmas had come, I had gotten some tools and was ready to try my hand at fusing fine silver. Followed all the directions precisely. It went as expected.

I had read that it would take lots of practice. Still I was very proud of what I had done. The next day I messed with it a little more and then my torch stopped working correctly. I was very distraught. Refilled it with butane, waited 5 minutes and nothing. I could hardly get it to light and when it did the flame was barely visible. So I waited until it cooled off and tried refilling it again. Same thing happened. So, life happens and I got busy and was not able to fool with it again until last night. Also I guess I should mention that my husband filled it with butane for me. So, last night when I went to light my torch it worked beautifully. I was so excited. I started out by making ball tip headpins. I was very amazed at how well they turned out. Decided I would try again with fusing the fine silver into rings. I have a hard time getting a flush cut even with the Lindstrom pliers…not sure why. So I wrapped my wire around a dowel, made some cuts, sanded the edges and began to fuse the rings. To my surprise they fused beautifully. I proceeded to use up the rest of my wire and hammered my rings. I washed my steel shot and added it to my tumbler. I put my newly fused rings, my first batch of rings, and my headpins in my new tumbler and turned it on. The 30 minute wait time took forever. Of course I had a bazillion things to do, that should have already been done, to take up my time though. After my tumbling time was up I took them out and was so thrilled. To me they, being the newest fused circles, looked perfect. Now if I just had some more wire.

I was not able to capture there beauty or shine, but believe me they sparkle!

New 3 Column Blog

So I have had several people ask me where I got the layout for my blog. Thought I would let everyone know. Someone from Twitter originally pointed me in this direction. I got it from Blogger Buster. Here is there link http://www.bloggerbuster.com/2007/08/blogger-template-downloads.html They are free templates and super easy. I tried for months to change mine only to have error after error. You will need to say all your widgets separately before adding the new layout and then reinstall then afterwards. Not sure if you will encounter the same problems but I learned that what I was doing wrong was I needed to download Winzip to unzip the file and then extract the xml and save that. Then I would upload the saved xml and it worked perfectly. The one I chose is Butterfly, and it was created by Amanda you can check it out here (http://www.bloggerbuster.com/2007/08/blogger-templatedownloads.html) I really liked these because they came with the blogger tool bar installed. If you are interested in changing yours you should definately check out the site.

How to Add Etsy Mini to Blogspot

I have seen a number of forum posts about people needing help adding their Etsy Mini to their blog. Hope this little tutorial helps you out.

•At top of blogger click on DESIGN

•Click on Add a Gadget

•Scroll down until you see the one that says “HTML/JavaScript” and click on the plus sign

•Go to Your Etsy

•Scroll down to Etsy Mini

•Click on – items from my shop – thumbnails – 2 columns – 4 rows (or however you like)

•Scroll to bottom of that page and highlight the javascript version

•Press Ctrl C on your computer to copy

•Go back to your blogger box that you opened for html and press Ctrl V to paste.

•Add a title such as Etsy Mini and click save.
